Multiple Teams · Announcing Our 2019-2020 Male and Female Athlete of the Year

Colonial High School Athletic Department Press Release:

Closing out the year in Athletics wouldn’t be complete without naming our Colonial High School Athletes of the Year.  This year’s voting came down to 4 boys on the ballot, Alex Diaz, Jalen Mathis, Gabriel Woody and Nestor Quinones.  The girls had three on the ballot as well with AJ Burgos, Isabella Diaz, and Keila Perez.  Each one of these great athletes served Colonial in a way that made all so very proud.  Each and every one of them were great ambassadors to our Athletic Program and deserving of the highest praise.  However, as in all voting there is one winner each year, and this year we are proud to announce that our Male Athlete of the Year is Alex Diaz and our Female Athlete of the Year is Keila Perez.

Alex was a great leader on and off the field of play.  His infectious smile and charismatic personality proceeded him on campus.  His accomplishments on the field with football is legendary.  Alex broke many school records including accounting for 50 touchdowns in three years, 23 touchdowns alone this year.  He is the only quarterback in Colonial History to have rushed for over 1000 yards and throw for over 2000 yards in one season.  During his time at CHS he was able to hoist the Boot Trophy three times in four years.  He helped his team win three homecoming games as well.  Alex also ran track and played baseball.  His scholarship to Springfield College is a testament to how much he was respected outside the Colonial community.

Keila was also an exceptional leader of and off the fields of play.  Her quiet demeanor led to her leading by example.  She was a captain of both her Track and Basketball Teams all the while boasting 4.2 GPA.  During her time at CHS she has the distinction of being a Metro Champion, District Champion, a Regional Champion and State Champion Runner up in both the Shot Put and Discus.  Had her season not been cut short this year, she was well on her way to compete at the State for two Gold Medals.  It might even be argued she would have competed at the State level in the new field event, the Javelin, where she excelled all spring as well.  To top it off Kaela was a starter on team that won 19 games this year in Basketball.  She will be attending Tallahassee Community College next fall on a Track Scholarship.

Both Alex Diaz and Keila Perez will have their pictures hung in the gym lobby Wall of Fame where they will reside alongside Colonials very best Athletes over the history of this school.

Please join the Athletic Department in congratulating both Alex and Keila as our Athletes of the Year 2019-2020.

(Our virtual ovation to Alex and Keila!!)

Alex and Keila continue to be leaders (in safety)!
